Matthew Clinton

Almost a year ago I wrote my first post about Matthew. This year, in keeping with my new tradition that I copied from Beth, I'm posting an interview that I had with him. As usual, I'll be sprinkling pictures throughout that may or may not fit into the subject at hand.

Are you excited that you're about to be 9? If so why?
Yep, because then everybody younger than me will be kind of jealous and also I'll be older and closer to being a teen.
What are you going to do on your birthday.
We're eating out at Brion's Grill

What's your favorite food?
Ribs
(Interviewer's note: I'll bet he learned to love ribs from eating his Uncle Dan's grilled barbeque ribs since they're the best in the world)
How's school going for you?
Uhhhh, well better than earlier in the year because I know more people and have more friends and I'm getting used to the classroom climate.
Do you like school?
Yeh, kind of.

What's your favorite subject?
Social Studies

And how are your grades?
For the last two quarters I got two G's and the rest O's. (
Interviewer's note: oh oh - maybe I won't be including this)

What does that mean?
Two Goods and the rest Outstandings
(Interviewer's note: Whew! That's more like I expected since I'm pretty sure he's in the Gifted and Talented program at his school.

What books do you like to read?
Diary of a Wimpy Kid and the Thirty-Nine Clues Series
What sports are you involved in right now?
Oh, I'm doing soccer
And your favorite sport?
Football
What do you do for fun?
I play video games and play outside. Sometimes if I can't go outside, I made up a card game and I make cards for it and sometimes I eat.

What do you like best about visiting Indiana?
Seeing you.
(Interviewer's note: He already had my heart but this really sealed the deal.)

Do you like having lots of cousins?
Yeah
Do you have a favorite cousin?
Ummmm, well, yeah - Evan.
What do you like about Cub Scouts?
I like the activities that we do. We make cars and boats and race them and sometimes we make candy things like snowmen out of marshmallows and pretzel sticks and for Christmas we made a sled and painted it.

Do you have certain chores that you do around the house?
Sometimes I clean my room and make my bed and pick up things around the house that are mine.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
A professional football player or be in the Army
What else is there that I forgot to ask you about?
For a hobby, I like to sleep too - but just at my house but if there are people around like friends and cousins then I like to stay up.

So that's the end of the interview but I have a few things I'd like to add along with the proof that they're true. First of all, like his mom and dad (and brother and sister) he's very athletic. You can see it in the way he swings a golf club:

Practices baseball:

And lines up for a shot in basketball:

Also, he's a team player willing to pitch in when there's work to be done:

And he's adventuresome and curious:

But most of all, he's an all-around great kid and we wish him a very, very Happy Birthday:

Patricia Jo

Saturday, our daughter-in-law Patty celebrated her birthday with her mom and children in the Washington DC area. That's where she teaches and her husband and our son is stationed. Right now, though, Dave is deployed in Afghanistan and Patty is 'holding down the fort'. As usual, I've sprinkled pictures throughout this post that may or may not fit the interview. But each one shows something about this beautiful person.

In keeping with tradition, I interviewed her over the weekend via email. Here's what she had to say:

What did you do on your birthday?
I spent the morning with 6 eight or nine year old boys because Matthew had his birthday sleepover from Friday to Saturday. I also went out to eat with my kids and watched David's basketball team win the league championship!
What's the secret to managing your very full schedule?
I just take one day at a time and the older kids are good at helping out.

Your schedule is insane when everything's normal. How in the world do you cope now that Dave is deployed?
My mother is a huge help in transporting kids to activities. I counted up that the older three are involved in seven extracurricular activities - scary!

What are your goals career-wise?
I love my job as an instructional coach, but it is more time away from the kids. I am toying with the idea of going back to being a reading teacher just to be closer to home.
As an Army wife, you've lived in a lot of locations. Which is your favorite?
Weather-wise - South Carolina. Experience-wise - Tennessee

What's your idea of an ideal vacation?
Right now - warm weather, beaches, spas

You're very athletic and sports oriented. You were on three teams that went to the state finals in Volleyball and two of them won the state championship. You also played college volleyball until an injury sidelined you. What are your feelings about such a sports oriented youth and do you recommend it for your kids?
I learned so much about life from playing sports and I definitely encourage it for my kids. Part of the reason I am a taxi-driver from 4:30 - 9:00 every evening is that I feel like my kids are too young to specialize in a sport. They need the experience of trying many new things out.

Patty and her father-in-law warming up for a round of golf.
Patty and Dave
What are you looking forward to in the coming year?
Continuing to watch my children grow and taking the time to focus on me - exercise is a big priority. And, of course, the end of Dave's deployment and having our family together again.

What other interesting things might I include about you?
ummmm.. I'm a Grey's Anatomy junkie, even though I have this entire season on DVR right now because I haven't had time to watch it. Other than that, I'm not very interesting.

I loved Patty's interview answers but she's wrong about one thing. She is very interesting. She has many interests and she's one of the kindest and sweetest people I've ever met.

With the patience of Job and the wisdom of Solomon, she's a perfect fit working with children in her career but more importantly as a mom to her beautiful children.

Eli being anointed by his new Godmother at his baptism
But she doesn't just shine in the world of children. She's sweet, understanding, modest, conscientious and hard working. Loving to everyone - friends, family, children, animals, and the population in general she, in turn, is loved by all.

So, Patty, I hope you had a very happy birthday. We're so blessed to have you in our family.

You Capture - Technology

Beth's You Capture subject this week is technology and I was in the perfect place to capture the perfect pictures of perfectly used technology - a houseful of teenagers. I accompanied Beth to Nebraska this past weekend and we stayed with my oldest daughter and her family. Here are some examples of the technology going on in her house.

I found the first teen setting up his music for his upcoming Xbox game:

I found another teen using his technology to capture one of our all-time favorite subjects:

And I found another teen multi-tasking. (Unfortunately you can't see the TV playing in the background):

And then I captured one of our all-time favorite subjects being introduced to technology:

And last, but far from least, I captured Foldinglaundry using her favorite technology to capture herself and one of our all-time favorite subjects:

And that's all I've got. I'm glad to be alive in this age of technology and I'm looking forward to seeing what everybody else captured. To see for yourself, visit Beth at Ishouldbefoldinglaundry.

True Confessions Tuesday - A Doozie

I haven't been around for awhile and it shows - everywhere. This is the post I promised myself every week that I would write. This is the one that every week I've been incapable of writing. And this is the post that every week that I don't write it, it gets worse. Yes this is the one where I confess to myself and everybody else that I've gained 20.2 pounds since my last Weight Watchers weigh in on December 20th. Here's how it happened. (Notice I say it happened - not that I did it. It just happened. Hmmm That might be indicative of part of the problem right there.)

On December 20th I was ill with an upper respiratory type infection. I'd been on antibiotics for a week or so and as soon as I got off, I quickly became symptomatic again. So I called my doctor and was put on another antibiotic - this one a 10 day regimen. As Christmas week approached, I didn't feel like I was getting better and by the day after Christmas (when our whole family gathers at a large rented house for the week), I felt like I was getting decidedly worse. By the 27th, I felt absolutely terrible which is the description I gave my doctor along with a list of a few other disturbing symptoms. He told me that the medication I was on could cause kidney problems and I think that's exactly what happened. He switched antibiotics and I very slowly started to recover.

But although, I had a few ups along with my downs during that week between Christmas and New Years, I never felt good. And something happened to my psyche. I had intended to indulge a little that week - stay up late, drink a little wine, and eat a little carelessly. As it turned out, I couldn't stay up past 9 or 10 and I couldn't eat or drink much of anything - much less alcohol. So I guess I felt.....deprived? Gypped?

It was literally weeks before I started to really feel like myself again. And during that time, as I'm prone to do, I comforted myself with food. At first I told myself that since I didn't get to indulge during Christmas week, I owed it to myself to indulge afterward. Then came the part where I aided my recovery with lots of food and no exercise - none. The more I ate and the less I exercised the worse I felt and everything spiraled out of control. Whew!

Now I'm hoping to claw my way out of this dark place and start again. The first step was realizing that I wasn't going to wake up inspired one day and want to diet and exercise. The next step was admitting to myself that it wouldn't be easy but it had to be done. The third step will be joining the new 6 week couples challenge at the Sisterhood with my daughter. There are lots more steps to come - both literally and figuratively speaking; and I intend to take them all - one at a time.

A final note. I read in a magazine a few weeks ago that people who gain 14 pounds in a month by eating more and not exercising were still up nearly 7 pounds 30 months later despite going back to their earlier healthier habits. According to the article, researchers believe that gains have long lasting effects because fluctuations may cause the body to find a new set point for its normal weight. That's the bad news and I'll just have to do my best to make myself an exception. The good news was that someone had gained tons of weight in short periods of time before. I'm not the only one and somehow that was a relief.

Now I'm going to create my list of disciplines, shop for healthier foods, and start all over again. I'm hoping that becoming fit is a little like stopping smoking. It took me two or three false starts before it became permanent. Maybe I've finally used up my fitness and weight loss false starts and I'm ready to make a permanent change. I fervently hope so.

So He Had A Bad Day

We enjoyed a getaway this past few days. We were just south of Memphis in the Tunica Mississippi area. We had a nice time and, as we were leaving the area, Mr. Right spotted a photo op that turned into an even better photo op. Here's what caught his eye and caused him to suggest that I get a picture:

While I was capturing this photo, a bird appeared to fly out of the top of the silo and I captured him too.

I photographed him as he flew by and it wasn't until I reviewed the pictures in my camera that I realized the drama that I had unwittingly captured.

And, even though this hapless rodent got to fly before he died and he saw the world from a birds eye view, I'm pretty sure it wasn't on his top ten wish list.

Here's the triumphant predator looking for more prey:

Probably a red-tailed hawk right?

And here's another from the series of pictures that we really stopped to capture.

And here's a camouflage hut for sure.

Ultimately, though, the shots of the day were the ones I caught by accident.

Win-Win

I've talked and talked about the perks of being a grandparent. Last weekend, once again, we got to enjoy those perks once again and it was a double win for us.

Like so many of our faraway grandchildren, we don't see our Louisville grandchildren nearly often enough so when Sarah asked us a favor involving spending the night with those grandchildren, we couldn't hesitate. Although it was a five hour drive on Saturday (Mr. Right had to work until 11 p.m. on Friday) and a five hour drive on Sunday, we found they were ten hours well spent.

Because we got to spend time with and enjoy:

Trey
Mary
Ethan
What's not to love about spending time with those wonderful children. Then as an added bonus:
Jack
and Dane
and their mom and dad stopped by on their way to Tupelo MS where they would be spending a few weeks for Chris' temporary work assignment.

All the children had a wonderful time.

And so did Grandpa and I.

Sunday morning Ethan and Mary posed with one of their pets.

And Sarah posed with her clone:

It was weird to see the grown up version and the baby version of the same person in one picture. He sure looks like his mom did when she was his age.

On the way home, we patted each other on the back for doing a good deed which made us feel like a million bucks and recounted the fun we'd had while doing it. It was great.

Oh and I caught a couple more pictures on the way home. The bridge that's a little too long for my comfort but obviously very strong and well built.

And a really small part of the enormous Fowler Ridge wind farm near Lafayette IN.

All in all it was a great weekend. Definitely a win win for us.

You Capture - Warmth

What do you mean I'm late? Just because You Capture went up a day early and I'm posting a day later than the old You Capture day? Okay, I'm late but better late than never right? I hope it's right because lately I seem to be cruising on some 'late' style itinerary.

I had all kinds of ideas for warmth this week and none of them really panned out. However as I searched the pictures I'd taken I came across this series that said warmth to me. It's about emotional warmth and it came about when we were in Louisville to babysit for our three Louisville grandchildren. Our daughter enlisted out help because she was planning to surprise her husband with a Valentine weekend getaway.

He had no idea that we were there to babysit when she handed him the empty suitcase. He definitely looked surprised (in a warm kind of way).

Then he found the card tucked inside. I can't imagine what he was thinking but I'm sure they were warm thoughts.

You can see his anticipation as he opened the card and I'm pretty sure he was feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

Then he read the card that said 'pack your suitcase because dinner tonight is NOT in Louisville'. (And this is definitely a warm smile.)

And finally, it makes me feel warm and happy inside when I see his face filled with an expression that combines happiness, anticipation, affection, and most of all warmth.

It might seem like a stretch but this series says warmth to me. To see more conventional warmth and maybe some not so conventional, visit Beth at Ishouldbefoldinglaundry.
