Christmas Music

I love Christmas music. The religious songs are the best but so many others are great too. Harry Connick, Jr.'s It Must Have Been Ol' Santa Claus and Smokey Robinson's Christmas Everyday are two awesome examples. What happy, good mood songs they are! I also like Ray Parker, Jr.'s Christmas Time Is Here; and, Two Steppin' Around The Christmas Tree by Suzi Bogguss will get your toe tapping every time. I even like Madonna's Santa Baby, The Beach Boys' Little St. Nick and Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmas Time.

But I know I'm getting old. Sixties. That might be the age you have to be when songs like The Pretty Little Dolly make you laugh even when nobody else does. I think it's hilarious and I can't take it seriously because it's SO bizarre and ridiculous. But it's that very over-the-top macabre humor that puts some people off and, in a way, it does me too. But it's funny and stupid and I laugh and moan every time I hear it.

So I understand why I'm at odds with everybody else when it comes to that song but the one that has me feeling sad is my new feeling when I hear Baby, It's Cold Outside. I've heard more than one person describe it as creepy and someone else said they thought of it as the date rape song.

I want to think of the people with these opinions as shallow and judgmental and harsh, but we're all a product of the world we live in today.

Back in the 60's, having another cigarette and music in the background and one more drink while you're out a little too late all added up to a wonderful, romantic evening.

Sometimes I wish I could go back to the 60's and I'm so grateful that I got to be young in that decade.

And sometimes I'm even glad I'm in my sixties.

  1. I tossed around whether or not to comment, because I am one who doesn't care for Baby, It's Cold Outside. I know you meant no offense (because after all, it's just a song), but I have to stick up for myself as not being shallow or judgmental...but rather someone who was once given a drink that tasted a little strange and unfortunately, listening to a song where a girl says, "what's in this drink?" sets me a little bit on the edge. I'm glad you like the song, as we're all entitled to our own opinions--but mine definitely does not come from being shallow. I wish that was the case!

  2. Erin, I said I WANTED to think of people as shallow, judgmental or harsh but that, because of the way things are today, I know it's not true. I was trying to convey that back in the sixties things were easier.
I'm so sorry I was insensitive and, to be honest, I just had to listen to the song to hear the line, "say, what's in this drink?". I didn't even realize it was there.
I'm glad you commented and please know that I truly understand where you're coming from.

  3. I love Christmas music, too! I think the emotion that any certain song can create, is so unique. Sometimes it's wonderful, sometimes it's amazing, romantic, creepy or whatever. Personally, I hate all things Chipmunks! And in recent years, I found out my Mother doesn't like Vince Guaraldi! GASP, SHOCK!

Bottom line, Christmas is a warm and beautiful season with delicious sights and sounds for each of us to enjoy as we so fancy :)

(and let's not forget the homemade cookies)

    Much love to all!

  4. You are so right! There are songs you could have come out with in the sixties that if they tried to come out with now, it would have a WHOLE different meaning. I could name some specific songs (not just Christmas) but I'm even too afraid to say the names because they could be so offensive now! But I'm with you on the Pretty Little Dolly song...I love it and and laugh my arse off every time I hear it!!!
